Sr. Mary Brigid Callan

Director of Stewardship and Development for the Diocese of Steubenville

Sr. Mary Brigid was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Colorado where she first sensed (and subsequently ignored) a call to religious life.  After earning a degree in Agronomy and a Ph.D. in Bioagricultural Sciences, she was briefly a farmer’s wife (which was not her vocation) and then went on to begin a corporate career as a research scientist.  This eventually led to a global career in business development in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, where she dabbled in finance at Harvard Business School, and then went on to help raise over $1.2 billion in capital and collaborative agreements.

She lived and traveled globally (Europe, Asia, the Middle East), briefly suffered in politics (State Chairman of her political party for 3 terms), and moonlighted as a professional fitness instructor…but decades later, still feeling that “God-shaped hole” in her life, she returned to answer God’s call to religious life.  She first entered religious life as an Augustinian, but is now a Franciscan Sister of Jacopa in Steubenville, Ohio.  At the same time, she put her development skills to work for Holy Mother Church, and is now Director of Stewardship and Development for the Diocese of Steubenville, Ohio.

Sr. Mary Brigid enjoys the rare blessing of being a Sister, a mother, and a grandmother, and, God willing, looks forward to many years serving the Diocese of Steubenville.  Don’t be surprised to see her running in the wee hours of the morning on the roads around Steubenville, or in your parish if she’s visiting,  as this is one of her pastimes (though in her last race, they timed her with a calendar).
